FSSAI Registration - An Overview

The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act), a consolidated act related to food safety and regulation in India, formed the FSSAI. It ensures that food products are subjected to quality checks, reducing food adulteration and the sale of substandard goods. It is in charge of registering and licensing Food Business Operators (FBO) in India. It is also responsible for establishing the laws and regulations for operating a food business in the country.

In India, who requires an FSSAI license or registration?

In India, all food and food-related firms must have an FSSAI License/Registration, and this 14-digit License number tells us about the producer’s authorization.

The FSSAI Registration or License is required for the following businesses:

  • Petty retailer dealing in food products such as snacks, confectionery, or the bakery shop
  • Any FBO having a minimum yearly turnover of Rs. 12 lakh.
  • Any individual who manufactures or sells food on his or her own.
  • Proprietary and novel food.
  • Cold storage facilities.
  • Hotels, Restaurants, and Bars.
  • Except for a caterer, someone who distributes food during a religious or social gathering.

 

Documents required for FSSAI registration

  1. Passport-sized photograph of Food Business Operator
  2. ID proof such as Voter ID, PAN card, Driving License, Passport, etc.
  3. Any other supporting document like NOC by municipality or panchayat, Health NOC.
